CO-OP & INTERNSHIP PERMIT.

PATHWAY TO TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN CANADA

CO-OP & INTERNSHIP PERMITS OVERVIEW.

Co-op and Internship Permits in Canada allow international students to gain valuable work experience in the country during their study program.

These permits are open, meaning they allow students to work anywhere in Canada as long as the work is a mandatory requirement of their academic program.

Certain eligible students from specific countries can also benefit from an International Co-Op work permit, which allows them to travel to Canada for work placements or internships.

It's important to note that some updates and temporary measures may affect off-campus work and permit applications. For an internship in Canada, students may need to obtain an internship visa, known as an International Co-op work permit.

Who can apply for a Co-op and Internship Permit?

You are eligible to apply for a Co-op and Internship Permit if you satisfy all the following prerequisites:

  • Possession of a valid study permit.

  • Your study program in Canada necessitates work for completion.

  • You have a confirmation letter from your educational institution stating that all students in your program must undertake work placements to earn their degree.

  • Your co-op position or internship constitutes 50% or less of your overall study program.

Between November 15, 2022, and December 31, 2023, you might not require a co-op work permit under certain conditions.

These include:

  • Holding a valid study permit applied for before October 7, 2022

  • Authorization to work off-campus

  • Eligibility to work over 20 hours weekly during class

  • Your co-op placement concluding by December 31, 2023

If your placement extends beyond this date or if you're ineligible for the temporary policy change, you must apply for a co-op work permit.

You can commence your placement before receiving the permit, and it won't impact other employment.

When can you apply for a Co-op and Internship Permit?

You can apply for a Co-op or Internship Permit once you have received your official acceptance letter from your designated learning institution.

When can you start working?

You can start working once you have received your Co-op and Internship Permit. The work period must be within the dates specified on your permit and cannot exceed the duration of your study program.
