Saskatchewan Launches the Tech Talent Pathway for Permanent Residency

The province of Saskatchewan opens a new Tech Talent Pathway under the Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program (SINP) on March 7, 2022, to bring highly skilled potential tech workers who are willing to share innovation success with them toward global competency.

Saskatchewan Launches the Tech Talent Pathway for Permanent Residency

They decided to establish this pathway to attract immigrants for permanent residency and to increase the number of workers in the technology sector since they are experiencing a labor shortage.


Eligibility for Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway


You may qualify for the Tech Talent Pathway if you live outside Canada or have legal status in Canada, and are not a refugee claimant. To be eligible to apply for the Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway, you must have the following:


1. A SINP Job Approval Letter for an eligible specific technology sector occupation.


Whether you are applying for Saskatchewan Tech Pathway or Express Entry, first you need to have an offer for a full-time job within the technology and innovation job sector in Saskatchewan. A valid SINP Job Approval is essential as it will serve as evidence that you intend to work and live in Saskatchewan.


2. Level 5 Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) if you’re not working in Saskatchewan or Level 7 if you are applying for Express Entry.


Once you start working, you must meet the language requirements mandated by your employer. Meanwhile, if you’re not yet working with the employer who offered you the job, your language level in English or French must be CLB level 5 or higher.


3. Minimum of 1 year of work experience in the offered field Minimum of 6 months of working experience in Saskatchewan.


If you are not from Saskatchewan, you need to have at least 1 year of work experience related to the job you have offered for the past 5 years. But if you are, you need to have at least 6 months of working experience for employers to offer you an eligible job. You must work full-time, which is 30 hours per week.


4. Post-secondary Education

Relevance is important, even in applying for jobs. You must have a post-secondary education related to your job offer, wherein you have one of the following listed below:

  1. A Master’s/Bachelor’s Degree

  2. A Three-year Degree

  3. A Two-year Education Diploma  

5. Eligibility to get professional licensing (for eligible computer, software, and electronics engineers)

Some occupations in Saskatchewan require licensing. To do that, you must:

  1. Provide a letter of approved registration as an Engineer-in-Training from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS); or

  2. Provide a Confirmatory Exam letter from APEGS


Reminder: The program criteria that the Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program uses may change, but the people who are appointed to assess the candidates will use the provided information on the government's website during the time they receive the application.


Also, it’s up to IRCC how many nominations they want the SINP to set every year, so there is no guarantee that all applications will be nominated.

Eligible Occupations for Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway


Candidates may be eligible to apply for the Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway if they receive a job offer from any of the jobs below, listed in National Occupation Classification Codes (NOC Codes):

  1. 0213 Computer and information systems managers

  2. 2133 Electrical and Electronics engineers

  3. 2147 Computer engineers (except software engineers and designers)

  4. 2171 Information System analysts and consultants

  5. 2172 Database analysts and data administrators

  6. 2173 Software engineers and designers

  7. 2174 Computer programmers and interactive media developers

  8. 2175 Web designers and developers

  9. 2281 Computer network technicians

  10. 2282 User support technicians

  11. 2283 Information system testing technicians


Eligibility for Saskatchewan Tech Talent Pathway for Express Entry Candidates


Candidates who have a valid Express Entry Profile Number and Job Seeker Code are also eligible for this tech pathway, as long as they live outside Canada, have legal status in Canada, are not refugee claimants, and meet the language requirement for Express Entry.


To have an Express Entry profile, applicants must be eligible to apply for one of the programs under Express Entry. Most of the time, tech workers qualify for either the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Canadian Experience Class. But if they are eligible for neither of these two, they can still apply for the Federal Skilled Trades Program.


Express Entry candidates have a different set of requirements and IRCC prioritizes them in processing their permanent residency applications. The processing time for permanent residency applications is supposed to be six months or less, but IRCC is currently dealing with a backlog that has increased processing time.
