Benefits of a Canadian Education

I started my Canadian education in Grade 11, in the International Baccalaureate program. After this, I went on to pursue a combined major in Business and Computer Science from the University of British Columbia.

My education in Canada has shaped the person I am today and helped me achieve goals that I didn’t even know I could set.

However, I think the benefits of my Canadian education boil down to the following three factors:

Benefits of Canadian Education

The Learning:

The quality of education in Canada is quite advanced, with very high academic standards and impressive faculty to teach us. I felt that there was a big focus on application and experiences as opposed to theoretical knowledge during my degree at UBC. My professors spent very little time focusing on theories and instead used lectures to inspire discussions and perform activities using those concepts in real life. A big part of my degree was my Co-Op experience, which is a 12-month work experience as part of your degree that enables you to gain experience by applying the concepts you are learning in school for a company. My co-op experiences, ranging from IT Support to Product Management, were part of what helped me learn and grow, and eventually secure my current job. Overall, this application-based education focus creates a superior learning experience for the students who study in Canada.

The People:

During my time studying, I met people from all around the world and learned in an environment where global perspectives were accepted and encouraged. I also developed deep bonds with the people around me during the journey of going through this degree. The campus culture in Canada promotes inclusion and diversity and creates a comfortable space for students to experiment and learn. The people I met in school helped me develop the maturity required for a successful career and a global mindset for solving problems.

Opportunities:

Education in Canada is globally recognized and opens the door to many opportunities. Since I went to a top-rated school, I had a lot of options after graduation to pursue a career. I decided to go into Management Consulting and enjoy the thrill of solving new problems for companies every day. My friends have gone into a lot of different professions and accomplished a lot even within their first year after their education. A strong educational foundation opens the door further in your career as well, since a lot of the leaders recognize their own Alma Maters and support the students from these schools. In conclusion, my education in Canada has been a source of high-quality learning. But beyond the conceptual learning, my education helped me mature as a person and opened the door to many opportunities.
